Mother Kills Child, Bloggers Cover-up
Christine Maggiore is one of the leaders of the AIDS denial movement, a self-styled “dissident” who claims the establishment theory that AIDS is caused by the HIV virus is false. She promotes her movement and herself by public speaking and through a movie made by her husband, Robin Scovill, on her struggle against the establishment. Maggiore’s movie makes much of her parenting practices, chiefly Attachment Parenting, breastfeeding, and refusing to test her children for AIDS.
Maggiore’s youngest child, Eliza Jane, died of AIDS-related pneumonia on May 15 of this year, and the story is finally coming out thanks to the Los Angeles Times:
Christine Maggiore was in prime form, engaging and articulate, when she explained to a Phoenix radio host in late March why she didn’t believe HIV caused AIDS.
The HIV-positive mother of two laid out matter-of-factly why, even while pregnant, she hadn’t taken HIV medications, and why she had never tested her children for the virus.
“Our children have excellent records of health,” Maggiore said on the Air America program when asked about 7-year-old Charlie and 3-year-old Eliza Jane Scovill. “They’ve never had respiratory problems, flus, intractable colds, ear infections, nothing. So, our choices, however radical they may seem, are extremely well-founded.”
Seven weeks later, Eliza Jane was dead.
The cause, according to a Sept. 15 report by the Los Angeles County coroner, was AIDS-related pneumonia.
These days, given advances in HIV care, it’s highly unusual for any young child to die of AIDS. What makes Eliza Jane’s death even more striking is that her mother is a high-profile, charismatic leader in a movement that challenges the basic medical understanding and treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
Two bloggers helped Maggiore advance her views and effectively encouraged her to neglect her child: Huffington Post’s Jay Gordon and Dean Esmay of Dean’s World. Neither has bothered to comment on Eliza Jane’s death, and in fact Esmay continued to promote Maggiore’s movie after the child was killed.
So I have seven questions for these brave crusaders for truth in their never-ending battle against the establishment and its authoritarian, patriarchal science:
1. When did you learn that Eliza Jane was sick?
2. When did you learn that she was dead?
3. Do you still trust her mother?
4. What responsibility do you feel about the fact that she was never tested for AIDS and was not treated adequately for the ear infection that eventually became the AIDS-related pneumonia that killed her?
5. Why haven’t you told your readers that Eliza Jane is dead?
6. Will you kindly review your position on HIV and AIDS, admit you’re wrong and make amends to the people who’ve been harmed by your spreading outrageous bullshit?
7. Specifically to Dean Esmay: you like to ask “what’s the harm?” when excusing bad policy, whether it’s the teaching of Ebonics as a Second Language or Creationism in the schools. Will you promise me that you’ll think of Eliza Jane the next you time you type “what’s the harm?”
So much for the myth that the mainstream media is a fountain of crap while bloggers are heroic seekers of truth.

You can read this piece by Liam Scheff on the girl’s death if you like. Liam’s story matches the story as I understand it:
A perfectly healthy child with not a single AIDS symptom gets an ear infection and fever. After a couple of days, her family doctor puts her on an antibiotic. Within 24 hours of being put on the antibiotic, the child dies of acute cardiorespiratory failure.
Yes, that’s certainly a typical “AIDS” death isn’t it? Well apparently so in an era where “AIDS” is defined as “any health condition, combined with the fact that a relative of yours has tested positive for HIV on some tests.”
And we all know how trustworthy the LA Times is, don’t we?
If you wish to break character, Richard, and ask me serious questions that aren’t about slandering people’s character, ask them. If, on the other hand, all you wish to do is tap-dance on a child’s grave and act as if what looks like a reaction to an antibiotic is “obviously” an AIDS death, well, you’ve got your own blog for such things.
If there were a license for blogging, this bastard would have just lost it. My reaction to him:
You’ve known about this for four months and suppressed it, the whole time shilling Maggiore’s movie, and only mention it now because I beat it out of you? Well thank God for the LA Times, daring to print the truths that bloggers suppress.
Why did you think it was wise to suppress this story after you promoted Maggiore so heavily? Did you really think you could hide it? Given the charges you make about media bias (which isn’t supported by the coroner’s report, BTW), why not get your side of the story out there first? Why wasn’t the child tested for HIV? You of all people must have asked the mother “what’s the harm?” in testing her.
Given solid information to contrary – which I don’t find in the story you linked – I can only conclude that Christine Maggiore killed that child by infecting her with HIV and denying treatment to her. She’s beneath contempt.
Children don’t get “acute cardiorespiratory failure” from amoxicillin, and the corner’s report was quite conclusive. Anybody can guess wrong about something as complicated as AIDS, but refusing to face facts when things like this happen — and in fact actively lying — takes a special talent.

It is of course a lie to say that I suppressed anything.
To answer the specific questions:
1) I never knew the child was sick until a week or so after the child’s death.
2) See #1.
3) I have no reason not to. Neither for that matter do you except your own bizarre obsessions.
4) I feel no responsibility whatsoever, as I have none. I also remain unconvinced by the LA Times’ story, which has too many holes in it. As I’ve stated on my blog, I’m looking for the actual medical examiner’s report rather than, as you are, trusting the LA Times to get the story right.
5) I have. I waited, however, until the medical examiner’s report was available before reporting it because I knew that people like you would immediately sling off slanderous allegations.
6) I’ve reviewed it several times. I wish you’d do the same.

Dean’s got an undeniable point about the LA Times. It’s pretty thin on details. And you look like you’re just spoiling for a time-wasting blog fight, Richard, until you present some more scientific evidence (not anecdotal emotional junk about “going home.”)
Children don’t get “acute cardiorespiratory failure”
The heck they don’t. A couple of friends of mine buried their infant son after exactly that, and an initial misdiagnosis by medical staff. No HIV or AIDS involved, by the way.
Evolutionary pressure will take care of this family. Not much of chance of the the other one getting old enough to breed, either. Darwin’s dues are always paid in full – eventually.

I’m waiting for my apology. I expect none, but there’s always the hope that maybe somewhere, deep inside Richard, there’s something resembling an honest and decent human being to do the right thing.

A reaction of the kind you’re describing is something that only happens in children with compromised immune systems, but in any event it warrants a 911 call or a quick trip to the emergency room. Maggiore didn’t follow that course of action.
I owe no apology to Maggiore or her friends and accomplices. Her lifestyle placed the child and risk and ultimately cost her her life. Apologies aren’t going to bring that poor child back.
The reaction I’m describing only happens to children with compromised immune systems? And you base that on what Richard, besides your fevered imagination? That and idiots like Alwin Hawkins, who has undoubtedly increased the average human lifespan by removing himself from the pool of America’s physicians?
Let’s face it Richard: You’ve made a complete idiot of yourself. You don’t understand the science, as you’ve demonstrated to everyone. You have made several assertions you cannot possibly back up, including blanket assertions about a coroner’s report you haven’t even read. You’ve slandered people for no good reason except that you don’t like what they have to say. Now you haven’t even got the decency to backpedal, let alone admit your ignorance.

A grim and ironic footnote to this case: in the “about us” section of Alive & Well, Christine brags about her two “beautiful and healthy children who have never had so much as an ear infection.”

Look, to all these proponents of the killer mom. First, the little girl had fluid in her lungs. That was found by the doctor who saw her last and also supported by the corners report. LOOK IT UP. This woman is in such denial about HIV and AIDS; she won’t even admit she knows where she contracted it – FROM HER BOYFRIEND who tested positive too. She claims now that she doesn’t know, but in early interviews admits her Italian boyfriend tested positive. She killed her daughter as surely if she had put a gun to her head. She did nothing to minimize the risk to her and did everything to heighten it. The child’s immune system was not fully developed and it took over her body at a very young age. Poor girl could have had every opportunity.
To those that say “why isn’t’ the son sick”. Well, he has never been tested. So, maybe just maybe he got lucky and escaped the disease or maybe his immune system hasn’t been lowered to the point of being symptomatic yet. Who knows, only time will tell at this point.
Look, some of what she expounds is correct. If you are HIV positive and go out doing drugs, having unprotected sex, not eating healthy and basically ignoring your health…yes you will get sick. Your immune system will go down the crapper and you will become AIDS symptomatic much earlier. The rest is bunk. You NEED to know your status (which her stupid husband doesn’t even know) and take your medications.
I have two friends that were/are HIV positive. Both had radically different approaches to their care.
Friend one knew whom and when he was infected, went on medications right away (he was on the TRIALS for AZT). He was one of the first group of men infected back in the 80’s, back when nothing was known about HIV or AIDS. He knew he had to do something. He stopped is partying, never had unprotected sex AGAIN. He takes different treatments when the others stop working and takes what he calls “drug holidays” where he goes off meds for a while under doctor supervision. They watch his viral load and T-Cells. Guess what happens when he goes off them? His viral load goes up and his T-Cells diminish. That’s when his doctor puts him on the next medication. He rebounds and his viral load goes down and T-Cells go up. He eats healthy and basically takes care of himself. He has of course been positive for over 20 years because of his diligence AND MEDICATIONS. And guess what? He is the only one of his group of friends here to still live to tell his tale.
Friend 2 found out he was positive because I forced him to get tested. He didn’t care about himself. He didn’t take hid medications, partied like it was his last day on earth. Drank, did drugs and continued to have unprotected sex. He really abused himself. He ran away from all his family and friends so he wouldn’t have to hear anything about taking care of himself. Guess what, two years later at age 28 he was dead. If he would have taken the meds he was given, I might be able to still talk to him today instead of visiting his grave.
Anyone who denies the effectiveness of current HIV medications is stupid and delusional. Christine Maggiore is nothing short of a murderer and I would like her brought up on charges each time one of her followers passes away from taking her advice.
Dean Esmay is lying. As dita points out, the coroner’s report says this child died of AIDS-related pneumonia, not an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Dean and his buddies have made-up your explanation because you don’t wish to deal with the facts. You’re lying, and your lies are killing people.

Terese, you remind me of the legal snort about the child who murders his parents and pleads for mercy on account of being an orphan. Christine Maggiore killed this child by recklessness and negligence, and the “grieving mother” shtick doesn’t cut it.

I wandered over to the “virusmyth” website. They have become convinced that the LA Times writers “invented” the reason for death, ignoring that they reference the LA Coroner’s results that were released in mid-September. It is only one of many conspiracy theories they are bouncing around.
Well it seems as though Doc Gordon has fessed up to mismanaging the issue about not HIV testing EJ. If anyone would want to deny the real findings of the coroners inquest into EJs death and imply that something else killed her you would imagine it would be him. But he seems to take the AIDS pneumonia as read.

They had their daughter seen by a physician the day before who administered an antibiotic.
To people who screech and scream about other peoples lives, especially while they are suffering so keenly, should look at themselves and see what they have for the rest of us to screech and scream about. Christine Maggiore is a magnificent human being, and obviously she attracted a very nice husband, who is intelligent enough to have his film on HIV critically aclaimed. These dear people are among the finest, most selfless human beings any of us could ever hope to know. Bless these dear bereaved people, don’t curse them in your profound ignorance. Now go ahead – screech and scream at me you howing hyenas.
It’s not surprising that the people who blame AIDS on AZT would blame AIDS-related pneumonia on antibiotics. Certainly, a bit of research would turn up anaphylactic shock as the best alternative explanation for the child’s death, given the downsides of accepting the official explanation which ultimately points to the mother’s risky lifestyle and crazy affliction for New Age beliefs in every sphere of life.
Unfortunately, the antibiotic shock theory doesn’t fit the facts. For one thing, allergic reactions like AS don’t occur on first use of the substance that creates the allergy. The denialists are adamant that poor little Eliza Jane had never had antibiotics of any kind before, and that ate only pure, organic, hippie vegetables purified by Shamanic rituals and raised only by Waldorf-educated farmers:

I side with the scientists.
I won’t screach and scream. First the Superdome has nothing do to with this case. This was not a “rush to the presses story”. As a matter of fact, it was left alone until the coroners report came out – 3 months later. Christine Maggiore is RICH and makes a boatload off her “Alive and Well” organization (for christ’s sake she had a 15 million dollar clothing business before – poverty is one thing she can’t claim). That’s the reason it’s so important for her to dispute this was an AIDS related death. Because, if it is, it delivers a large blow to the fundamental core of her groups phillosophy. If that happens, no more money coming in (or a drastic drop at least). Most the doctors that checked the little girl out did so in passing. The last thing I would like to say about this is that I am all for letting people make their own informed decisions on matters of health for their children. However, there was no information her to make an informed decision. Christine refused to even know her daughters status, or keep up to date on what her T-Cell and viral load counts were. How can one make life and death decisions when they don’t have all the information. I feel that is the least she could have done for her daughter. Maybe, if she would have heard that her daughter tested positive and her viral load was climbing and her T-Cells were dropping she could have tried something, an herbal treatment at least. If then the girl was retested and the tests showed that that treatment wasn’t working, maybe she would have at that time wanted to look at other options. We’ll never know though. HIV and AIDS was discoverd in the early 80’s. That’s is when the most people passed away from this disease. They tried everything to identify it. They looked to fabrics, drugs, alcohol, something in the air. The only commonality they found was sexual relations and later blood transfusions from tainted blood donations. It wasn’t till 1987 that AZT was even brought into play as a theropy. So if HIV/AIDS don’t exist and the drugs are what are actually killing people, why did so many people in the beginning die of HIV? According to Alive and Well they received no drug theropy as there was none, so they should be alive today right? Why are people currently on these life saving medications living unheard of amounts of time? You may want to hold on to the message this woman is expounding, but if you really really dig into it it doesn’t add up. It’s dangerous and quite frankly deadly. To anyone who believes Alive and Well’s message I would urge you to watch “And The Band Played On” – you need a refresher on the beginning of this epidemic.
My father was hospitalized with an allergic reaction to penicillin… it involved hives and a real danger of suffocating because of the swelling in his neck. Fortunately it was not anaphylactic since the reaction was during travel. There was no fluid in his lungs.

Research, do research. The HIV “tests” say right on the packaging that they are not to be used to determine if HIV is in the blood. That is true of the Western Blot and Eliza tests. One of the scientists (I believe Dr. Rodney Richards/Western Blot) who developed the test now debunks his own test. Christine had him as a guest speaker. He had the patent on the test. How can an antibody cause illness? An antibody shows that the body has sucessfully fought off the foreign invader. When did science change? How can a test that isn’t supposed to be used in the first place for what some of you people are alleging Christine should’ve done be used if it is non specific for HIV? As any informed person knows there are over sixty “diseases” that cross react with the “tests” including the flu and pregnancy! How much credence should Christine have given to this false science, especially since the so-called reliable tests said she was positive and negative and indeterminate after being tested time and time again? How much was she to be jerked around when this is her life at stake but there is no truth to be found in this “science”? Christine’s only “crime” is to be a very bright woman who cared not only for her own health (prior to her children being born), but for her children’s health and she carefully considered all the information, including her own body’s contradiction to the main stream information on the subject.

the brain. Many common over the counter meds have this ingredient. The FDA is pulling this off the market, currently. Also, how many other pharmaceuticals have been pulled off the market, recently? The answer is many. Just read about some of the side effects of many of these drugs. I know a lot of elderly folks who think twice about swollowing their pills! Do some research on the horrible side effects of these drugs and the AID drugs. C’mon, there is a great deal to be learned out there and blogging without knowing what you’re talking about especially when you’re out to destroy a extremely knowledgeable family is unconscionable… Christine actually ran into the Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Kary Mullis just when she needed information badly. She literally bumped into him. What’s the odds on that? He developed the PCR test that detects HIV in the blood. Ha, he has withdrawn his position on his own scientific position and he was there when Christine needed him most. See his comments at the beginning of her book. He says something like “at long last there is a crack in this HIV thing and at last, the light is streaming in”. Sorry Kary, I don’t have the book in front of me. It is a profound statement and he is a scientist’s scientist.
AIDS researchers do a bit more than read the warning labels, Linda, and so do doctors treating people with AIDS. They measure T-cell counts and viral load, look at overall wellness, and treat with a variety of drugs, including AZT and antibiotics.
Christine Maggiore has developed AIDS symptoms in the past couple of years, which she attributes to “stress” and believes can be treated with Chinese herbs, organic vegetables, and long walks on the beach. While she’s perfectly entitled to end her own life this way, it’s a pity and tragedy that she was allowed to end Eliza Jane’s.
And I don’t see what the odds of one odd person meeting another have to do with any of this; are you suggesting Jesus made it happen? Shout hallelujah and spread the good news, but don’t forget to take your medicine.
Might be more useful to wish her well than wish her dead, this is all a bit sickening kicking someone when they are down.

The child died after taking an antibiotic and Tylenol, deaths do happen from reactions to these.

Everything has already been cogently said. It is lifestyle that causes AIDS, poor nutrition, drug usage, etc. My husband and I support “Feed the Children”. Dr. James Robinson says himself, the babies in his care in Africa arrive dangerously malnourished, those who test positive to the HIV/AIDS testing and those who test negative. He says you can’t tell them apart. When they are all fed a nutritious diet and receive medical care they all fill out and have their health restored and you can’t tell them apart, once again. Even this humanitarian tells it like it is! I have offered a plethora of intelligent discussion from others who have recognized credentials on this subject. The subject you know NOTHING about has been extensively covered. One more thing, the AIDS establishment has been invited over and over again to share their side of the equation in Christine’s forum and they have NEVER had the guts to face their opponents because they know they’re full of you know what. Their “arguments” don’t hold a scintilla of respectable science against the truth and they won’t be in a room of any sort, closed session or open TV broadcast. I think I should clarify that Christine’s invitations have been friendly and humble. A few years later, when I was starting to become educated on the subject I ran into her and she was one of the ones who said it was not a worry. The truth is known within the medical community but they have to walk a very straight line. Whether its ethical for them to do this, is their problem. I have a medical doctor friend who is loathe to prescribe medication. He deplores it, so he basically doesn’t work until he absolutely has to. Quite a few have gone into alternative medicine.

You forget the Hemophiliacs were misdiadnosed and given drugs like AZT, so no wonder they keeled over.
Heat treatment stops RNA transcription so when this was introduced they stopped forming antibodies to other people endogenous retroviruses.
This reduced the rate of cross reaction with HIV antibody test.
