Criminal Offenders
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, black and Hispanic Americans commit crimes at a higher rate than whites*:
The prevalence of imprisonment in 2001 was higher for:
– black males (16.6%) and Hispanic males (7.7%) than for white males (2.6%)
– black females (1.7%) and Hispanic females (0.7%) than white females (0.3%)
Consequently, those civil rights leaders who want to take Bill Bennett off the air had better shut down the FBI as well:
Wade Henderson, the executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, demanded that the show be canceled.
Moron.
Bill Clinton wanted to have a nation-wide dialog on race, and that was fine and dandy. But every time somebody makes a true and uncomfortable observation that touches on race, even incidentally, the demagogues try and make it into lynching material. I’m not optimistic about this dialog ever happening.
See Jeff and John and Classical Values.
* Yes, I’m aware that committing crimes and being imprisoned aren’t exactly the same thing, but the raw data on victimization is limited to violent crimes. Don’t be so picky.
UPDATE: This bit from the Freakonomics boys is truly hilarious:
It is true that, on average, crime involvement in the U.S. is higher among blacks than whites. Importantly, however, once you control for income, the likelihood of growing up in a female-headed household, having a teenage mother, and how urban the environment is, the importance of race disappears for all crimes except homicide.
Well, duh, nobody said that American blacks have criminality encoded in their genes, morons, they said they commit crimes at a higher rate than whites for unspecified and irrelevant reasons. This argument is like saying “while incarceration rates for blacks are higher than for whites, correcting for prison residency makes the gap disappear.” These guys have Ph. D.’s, of course.
