{"id":2116,"date":"2004-07-09T09:33:10","date_gmt":"2004-07-09T16:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mossback.org\/archives\/2004\/07\/france-opposes-un-sudan-sanctions\/"},"modified":"2004-07-09T09:33:10","modified_gmt":"2004-07-09T16:33:10","slug":"france-opposes-un-sudan-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bennett.com\/blog\/2004\/07\/09\/france-opposes-un-sudan-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"France opposes UN Sudan sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tOnce again we find the government of France up to its old tricks, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/3875277.stm\">opposing international action to stop genocide in Sudan<\/a> in order to protect its oil deals: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Some one million people have fled their homes and at least 10,000 have been killed in what the UN calls &#8220;the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crisis.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>A rebellion broke out in Darfur early last year, when two groups took up arms, accusing the government of ignoring the region. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Darfur, it would be better to help the Sudanese get over the crisis so their country is pacified rather than sanctions which would push them back to their misdeeds of old,&#8221; junior Foreign Minister Renaud Muselier told French radio. <\/p>\n<p>France led opposition to US moves at the UN over Iraq. As was the case in Iraq, France also has significant oil interests in Sudan. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the UN has agreed to send in a token force of 300, most agree that it will take at least 10,000 to stop the genocide.
