{"id":3075,"date":"2005-02-04T15:26:03","date_gmt":"2005-02-04T22:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mossback.org\/archives\/2005\/02\/irregularities-in-mosul\/"},"modified":"2005-02-04T15:26:03","modified_gmt":"2005-02-04T22:26:03","slug":"irregularities-in-mosul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bennett.com\/blog\/2005\/02\/04\/irregularities-in-mosul\/","title":{"rendered":"Turnout in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tOverall, the turnout looks higher than expected, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A63293-2005Feb4.html\">according to the Washington Post<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Election officials said they expect the final results to show a higher-than-expected turnout among the nation&#8217;s 14 million eligible voters, although Sunni Arabs are believed to have voted in much smaller numbers than the Shiites or Kurds.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But allegations are surfacing about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/iraq\/la-020405iraq_wr,0,4216364.story?coll=la-home-headlines\"> vote-counting issues in Mosul:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Sunni politicians complain that voting irregularities in Mosul, Iraq&#8217;s third largest city with a mostly Sunni population, deprived many Sunni Arabs, as well as Kurds and Christians, of their right to vote. The election commission has sent a team to Mosul to investigate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably not as bad as Seattle, but these things do have to be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>New York Times says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/04\/international\/middleeast\/04cnd-iraq.html?pagewanted=3&#038;ei=5094&#038;en=3f6353366b5601ff&#038;hp&#038;ex=1107579600&#038;partner=homepage\">polling places in Kurdish parts of mainly-Sunni Mosul<\/a> were closed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A member of the election commission, Safwat Rashid, a 59-year-old lawyer from Sulaimaniya, in the Kurdish region, was evasive about the turnout, implying it might end up significantly lower than the initial estimate. The figure has been see-sawing as a result of protests being fielded by the commission about irregularities in the voting and in some of the counting.
