{"id":3376,"date":"2005-06-21T15:48:09","date_gmt":"2005-06-21T23:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bennett.com\/blog\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/06\/21\/religious-fanatics-at-it-again\/"},"modified":"2005-06-21T15:48:09","modified_gmt":"2005-06-21T23:48:09","slug":"religious-fanatics-at-it-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bennett.com\/blog\/2005\/06\/21\/religious-fanatics-at-it-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious fanatics at it again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tThis is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-topock21jun21,1,2347784.story?coll=la-headlines-business&#038;ctrack=2&#038;cset=true\">downright sickening:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>TOPOCK, Ariz. \u2014 In the Mojave Desert, just west of the California-Arizona border, an ancient pattern of lines inscribed on the desert floor marks out the pathway to heaven for a small group of American Indians.<\/p>\n<p>Once covering 50 acres, the so-called Topock Maze is held sacred by the Fort Mojave tribe as a place of final atonement, the destination of a soul&#8217;s lifetime journey along the Colorado River from Spirit Mountain, 40 miles to the north in Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>These days, however, tribe members say that modern civilization \u2014 in the form of a Pacific Gas &#038; Electric Co. water treatment plant \u2014 is blocking their road to the afterlife. The tribe claims that the plant, completed but not yet operating, is close enough to a surviving portion of the maze to disrupt their spiritual journeys. It is suing the utility and state regulators in an effort to have the facility torn down or moved.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s revenge for the smallpox.<\/p>\n<p>And on another front, we see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesdispatch.com\/servlet\/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle%2FRTD_BasicArticle&#038;c=MGArticle&#038;cid=1031781821804&#038;path=!news!columnists&#038;s=1045855935174\">same sort of squirreliness<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When a science museum is loath to show an IMAX film because it refers to evolution, we need to ponder the role of religion in our society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Volcanoes of the Deep Sea&#8221; has been rejected by some IMAX theaters in the South out of fear that it might offend people with fundamental religious beliefs, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it&#8217;s not going to sell, we&#8217;re not going to take it,&#8221; said Lisa Buzzelli, director of an IMAX theater in Charleston. &#8220;Many people here believe in creationism, not evolution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How do we defeat religiously-motivated terrorists when we have this sort of crap in our own backyards?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is downright sickening: TOPOCK, Ariz. \u2014 In the Mojave Desert, just west of the California-Arizona border, an ancient pattern of lines inscribed on the desert floor marks out the pathway to heaven for a small group of American Indians.
