Jeff Jarvis suggests that Howard Stern should go to satellite radio, Dave Winer thinks Jarvis is reporting rather than suggesting, and Stern himself discusses it on his show:
He said that if he went onto satellite, they’d sell 12 million receivers immediately; “they wouldn’t be able to make them fast enough.” It would change the entire radio industry, making broadcast stations worth a helluva lot less, he said, and he’s right.
Never in history has a man been more full of crap than the talentless Howard Stern. His whole schtick is dependent on standards of decency setting the boundaries of good taste so he can position himself outside them. He’s like the little kid who’s learned that he can get attention saying bad words who then works the gimmick to death. He didn’t even invent this gimmick himself, he stole it from Alex Bennett.
In a setting where adolescent content isn’t circumscribed, his show would have no audience. He was created by the FCC, and he knows it, so all this whining about the government cracking down on his free speech rights is just crocodile tears. He benefits from being pushed out of the 6 markets that Clear Channel has banned him from by generating buzz for his tired formula.
If Stern was to go to satellite radio, which he won’t, he’d lose his audience because the 13-year-old boys who dominate it don’t have the cash for an XM radio and the monthly fee. Who’s he trying to kid?
I think that you are seriously mischaracterizing Stern’s audience, and I think that you would be very surprised if the actual demographic was known.
If you think that he’s riding along the same potty-mouth ideas that other folks adhere to, then I suspect you’re not looking too far for your research. The same demographic rewound their Tivo multiple times during the superbowl halftime show, and I don’t think it was just 13 year olds.
He’s right about his audience…they are as loyal as Limbaugh’s.
There’s only a million TiVos in the world, Mike, so nobody is going to run a radio network that depends on them for its survival. Stern’s radio audience is supposed to be 18 million people.
However you shake it, I still think that you’re underestimating the loyalty and age of Stern’s fans, if not the number of the fans. Where’s the 18million number come from ? (not disputing it, just curious)
What I find interesting here is that he has said/done much worse things before, and not a whimper about it.
While I don’t listen to him myself, personally, I think that the country should stop pretending that curse words and sexual content is so damaging and inappropriate.
I mean…Tony Blair and his fellow countrymen grew up looking at boobies on Page Three…and they turned out ok, didn’t they ?
Stern’s been fined, disciplined, and punished by the FCC and his syndicator many, many times before. The Clear Channel action is nothing new.
And I never said there’s anything wrong with showing boobies on the radio.
Ignorance must be bliss. Your assumption of howard sterns appeal and, more importantly, his fan base speak volumes.
Its not up to me to explain to you what draws someone into being a fan of howard,His show appeals to different people for different reasons…some like the on-air chemestry of he and his crew, some like his abbrasive approach to celebrity interviews, some of us simply like a good fart joke now and then but one of his major appeals is his brutal honesty……Not ill-informed assumptions towing a half ass agenda
Using the same pathetic powers of assuption you demonstrated I would be inclined to say that anyone who would waste their time judging other peoples taste in humor is badly in need of one themselves
To make blanket statments and To say The average stern fan is a 13 year old boy is no different than saying the average person from arkansas marrys their sister, or The average catholic priest rapes little boys or The average STERN-Hater is an uptight religious zelots who doesnt get laid and trys to force their opinions upon other people….Would you say those are 3 accurate statements? Well thats what it looks like when you think with A blanket AND ASSUME THINGS YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT and THAT is alot more offensive than any skit howard ever Did.
P.S. he gets the number 18 million because thats his share of the NEILSON rating system after all the various markets are calculated. Its all available for your perusal but id advise next time you start speaking of things you dont really know about you should open your eyes BEFORE you open your mouth….
Sincerely,
a Loyal Stern fan
