SINGAPORE — Baseball and softball were tossed out of the Olympics for the 2012 London Games on Friday.

The action by the International Olympic Committee marked the first time it had dropped any sports from the Summer Games in 69 years. The committee then rejected the five sports wanting to get in.

Ribbon and ball stay in, of course.

  1. Come on, apply some of your cold analysis…

    They cite three issues:
    Doping problems
Big stadium costs that often are ‘wasted’ after the event
    Lack of global appeal
A fourth is implied: short history in Olympics

We may love the game – but is the rest of the world really ready for it? I guess not.

  2. When a nation becomes sufficiently civilized, it will always develop a love for baseball, but they do need electricity.

  3. After such behavior as the recent Kenny Rogers escapade, IMHO not including baseball/softball is probably a wise choice on the part of the Olympics.

  4. Well, if you’re going to use bad behavior as a filter, then throw out soccer since the very worst crowd behavior in the world has been in “football.” No, safety first, keep our ballplayers safely away from any olympic venue. Let ballplaying remain a last vestige of a civilised society. Or civilized. I feel so euro this morning.
