Jay Nordlinger gets it:

Many years ago Chris Matthews–now famous on TV–hit on an interesting formulation: He said the Democrats were the “mommy party” and the Republicans the “daddy party.” That is, the Democrats were “nurturers,” concerned with health policy and day care. The Republicans were “protectors,” taking care of national security and other manly matters. This notion is obviously galling to some. But Mr. Matthews was on to something, and we now find ourselves in a “daddy party” time.

Arnie and Bush are both manly men. Dean, Kucinich, Clark, Kerry, Edwards, Sharpton, and Gray Davis are not.

UPDATE: Honest Democrats recognize their party has a “wuss” issue:

Florida Sen. Bob Graham hired David “Mudcat” Saunders, a Roanoke, Va., political consultant who has declared that most white Southern men regard Democrats as “wusses,” to advise him on reaching these voters. The Graham campaign sponsored a NASCAR racing truck, a Ford F-150 that won its debut race in July at Kansas Speedway.

I ain’t making this up, boys and girls. Smart Democrats vote Republican, too. California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, formerly the smartest man in that state’s legislature and inside track holder for the gubernatorial nomination in 2006, admits to voting for Arnie:

“It was the first time I ever voted for a Republican in my life,” Lockyer said during a speech at an election post-mortem at the Institute for Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. “What Arnold Schwarzenegger represented for me was hope, optimism and change, and I want that.”

Take this as the opening salvo of the 2006 Democratic Primary.

  1. So let me get something straight: guys who win the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and as many as three Purple Hearts aren’t manly men, while a draft-dodger who went AWOL from his ANG commitments and a movie star are?

It’s a brave new world we live in, isn’t it…

  2. So Dean, Clark and Kerry (who has more years in the military than Bush, Arnie, Chris Matthews and probably yourself *combined*) are not manly men because … why?
Because they’re not willing to pour hundreds of billions of dollars down a rathole in a cause that will only be ultimately counterproductive to U.S. national security interests?

Get real. And get a life.

  3. I’m laughing like mad here.

You are such a chickenhawk, Richard. You don’t even get the irony of this silly post.

Clark, Davis, and Kerry are decorated Vietnam Vets. They “took care of national security” by placing their own asses on the line. The ultimate expression of manliness.

You, Arnie, the Shrub, and Matthews…hmmm… maybe y’all once sat around a campfire at an Iron John party and beat on tom-toms while you cried about your pappies not hugging you enough…but that isn’t quite like fighting in a manly war.

Seriously, Bennett: don’t get too friggin’ cute in your partisan babbling. It’s unmanly. And downright f**king insulting too, if I may be blunt.

  4. “manly liberal vet”, manly men don’t leave anonymous comments on blogs – they use their real names and real e-mail addresses.

Wesley Clark is running as a surrogate for Hillary, not as his own self.

Kerry is running on his wife’s money, and not as his own self.

Davis is a momma’s boy through and through, and didn’t even speak to his daddy for the last twenty years of the poor man’s life.

It’s easy to point to the military service records of these guys because they’re the only Democrats who have any. But what have they done lately, and what will they have the country do?

Whine and cry, mainly, like ole JD up there, is about all.

  5. Man, are you full of shit. Wimpy little shit sits around and calls decorated veterans mama’s boys. What a punk.

  6. How many of those decorated vet politicians got their medals the same way Lyndon Johnsons did? Besides, some of the guys I served with were wusses who just got caught up in the action and then got medals. They weren’t volunteers, for the most part, so what does that prove. They’re still wusses.

  7. In other news, a politician campaigning in Alaska sponsored a local grizzly-wresting match. Are you implying that without some sort of adivising, Graham wouldn’t be campaigning to the NASCAR crowd ?

Graham using NASCAR to campaign in Florida would be like campaigning to cacti in Arizona…not doing it is just dumb. In addition, NASCAR’s incrasing fanbase aren’t men, bubba…they’re women:

Moving on…since when does Bill Lockyer’s behaviour have your respect ? Last year, you called him a “gasbag”…

    You turn over easy, Richard.

Also, for people who would like to be informed, Kerry can’t (and has said won’t) be using any of his wife’s money:

“It’s easy to point to the military service records of these guys because they’re the only Democrats who have any. But what have they done lately, and what will they have the country do?”

They’re not the only democrats with military service…they are only some of the millions, and (the horror!) some of those vote. You post about them not being men, and when people point out their military service, you discount it as irrelevant and try to change the point to their political history. Very interesting.

On a personal note, having met and surfed the same beach with John Kerry, I can safely say that standing man-to-man with him, you’d most likely not be calling him a wuss.

  8. so much fun here.
got some fun facts I just learned about year 2006:

88% of Americans will save less than $100 on their 2006 federal taxes as a result of this year’s tax cut.

(and the average amount that those people _will_ save is $4.00)

88 percent seems like a lot.

  9. Most of the comments are barking up the wrong tree. It doesn’t matter if INDIVIDUAL DEMOCRATS have cojones or not, their party doesn’t have them. To get the NATIONAL nomination of their party, they have to toe the ‘mommy party’ line.

BTW, the “Bush is AWOL” thing is a hoax. What he got was a transfer during an evaluation period so he was “not observed”. Ta-da! There’s an article in George magazine, but the relevant details can be found here: http://www.crossbearer.com/resume/The_Truth.pdf
