The AP reports Kerry Trails Bush in Electoral Votes at the start of his convention:

BOSTON – John Kerry (newsweb sites) narrowly trails President Bush (newsweb sites) in the battle for the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, as he makes his case at the Democratic National Convention this week to topple the Republican incumbent. Tall hurdles remain in his path, including Electoral College (newsweb sites) math that favors Bush.

The girlie-man pitch at the Yankees/Bosox game Sunday didn’t help – Kerry lined up two-thirds of the way from the mound to the plate, and still threw a bouncer.

But this raises an interesting point, one that’s been perplexing me for a few days now. The Democrats, particularly under Carter, used to be the party of human rights. If one were sincere about this cause, a dictator like Saddam who routinely gassed, tortured, raped, and murdered his people would be completely unacceptable, a point that’s been highlighted by principled men of the left who supported regime change in Iraq on humanitarian grounds. So why has the mainstream of the Democratic Party abandoned this historic commitment to the downtrodden in favor of a “more stuff for me” platform of free health care, higher salaries for union teachers, etc?

Taking cheap shots at the President for the relatively innocuous prisoner abuses at Abu Ghraib while ignoring the horror that Saddam inflicted on his people strikes me as craven beyond belief, but that’s Jimmy Carter for you, and that’s why I hate what the Democratic Party has become.

From Ann Coulter’s Too Hot for USA Today column:

For 20 years, the Democrats wouldn?t let Jimmy Carter within 100 miles of a Convention podium. The fact that Carter is now their most respectable speaker tells you where that party is today. Maybe they just want to remind Americans who got us into this Middle East mess in the first place. We?ve got millions of fanatical Muslims trying to slaughter Americans while shouting ?Allah Akbar!? Yeah, let?s turn the nation over to these guys.

Right on; I was shocked that the Democrats’ political judgment is so impaired that they let Carter speak in prime time. All he did was remind people of the sanctimonious, ineffectual, narcissistic positions that stirred up the anger against us in the Middle East and gutted the CIA.

It was a clear case of political malpractice.

Another reason Democrats should vote for Bush

We’ve pointed out that a Kerry victory this year will all but end Hillary Clinton’s presidential hopes, and now a leading union boss says it will also retard progress toward needed reforms in the labor movement:

BOSTON, July 26 — Breaking sharply with the enforced harmony of the Democratic National Convention, the president of the largest AFL-CIO union said Monday that both organized labor and the Democratic Party might be better off in the long run if Sen. John F. Kerry loses the election.

Andrew L. Stern, the head of the 1.6 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), said in an interview with The Washington Post that both the party and its longtime ally, the labor movement, are “in deep crisis,” devoid of new ideas and working with archaic structures.

Stern argued that Kerry’s election might stifle needed reform within the party and the labor movement. He said he still believes that Kerry overall would make a better president than President Bush, and his union has poured huge resources into that effort. But he contends that Kerry’s election would have the effect of slowing the “evolution” of the dialogue within the party.

So there you go, Donks, another reason to send Kerry home to the Heinz fortune this November: do it for the workers.

Kerry swirls ’round the toilet

The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll is super-bad news for Kerry: Kerry has lost support against Bush in trust to handle five of six issues tested in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, including terrorism, Iraq, taxes and even health care. The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll is super-bad news for Kerry:

Kerry has lost support against Bush in trust to handle five of six issues tested in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, including terrorism, Iraq, taxes and even health care. And Kerry’s ratings on personal attributes ? honesty, strong leadership, consistency, empathy and others ? have softened as well.

Probably the single most important advance for Bush on the issues in this poll is his rating for handling terrorism. Fifty-seven percent of Americans now approve, up from 50 percent last month. And registered voters trust Bush over Kerry to handle terrorism by 55 percent to 37 percent, compared with an even split, 48 percent to 47 percent, a month ago.

Among specific groups that are key to Kerry’s chances, since June he has lost 13 points among women in trust to handle terrorism, 11 points among moderates and eight points among independents.

There’s a significant gender gap in this race: Kerry has an 11-point lead over Bush among women, while Bush is +15 among men. Bush’s support has gained a bit among men in the past month, while women’s preferences remained about the same.

So instead of some pre-convention bounce, we see Kerry’s support eroding significantly; as we approach the election, Iraq will get significantly better, the economy will continue to improve, and the sanctimoniousness of Democratic Party all-stars Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and Hillary Clinton will alienate voters even further.

Things are looking pretty good for Mr. Bush.

Edwards’ malpractice suits

A recent John Stossel report in ABC’s 20/20 points out that 76% of Las Vegas obstetricians have been sued by lawyers like John Edwards, who famously won huge awards in dubious cases:

Cerebral palsy is a central nervous system defect that makes it hard for people to control their muscles. At the time of Edwards’ cases, the defect was often said to be caused by a lack of oxygen to the baby’s brain during delivery. Edwards and other lawyers have argued that if the doctor involved had only done a Caesarean section, the child’s cerebral palsy could have been prevented.

He won a record verdict in a cerebral palsy case after he told the jury he was speaking for the injured infant, in the womb. He was very convincing and the jury awarded his clients over $6 million. Scruggs told me, “Wouldn’t you want your lawyer to be just as clever and just as effective?”

One thing doctors may have learned from these kinds of cases was to do more C-sections. The procedure is more common today for many reasons, including scheduling convenience, but doctors say fear of a cerebral palsy lawsuit has had a big impact.

Since 1970 C-sections have gone from 6 percent of all births to 26 percent. “And there has not been one small decrease in the cerebral palsy rate across the board,” said Mandeville.

See ABC’s message boards for some discussion of the unusual disclaimer.
